In our latest Surveyor Spotlight, we’re delighted to welcome Paul Spregg AssocRICS, Director of SB Home Surveys, a surveying practice based in Worcestershire.

Paul started his career as a delivery driver, delivering hydraulic parts to factories. While on holiday, he spoke with a friend about coming into their estate agents to gain some experience and did this on Saturdays starting out as a viewings negotiator for 6 months before being offered a full time role, covering Droitwich and Worcestershire, where he was there for 5 years.

Paul was in constant contact with surveyors in the local area. He spoke with a particular surveyor about how to get into the industry. He explained that his son was on a surveying course at the time with Sava.

Paul enrolled on the Sava course in 2018 while working and was able to gain experience and shadow experienced surveyors not long after, completing the course in 2020.

How did the Sava training go for you?

The Sava course was enjoyable, and I was fortunate to have a helpful group in the classroom. I still stay in touch with many people and found a surveying position after qualifying as a surveyor.

What happened next?

I joined a firm based in Stoke in January 2021, and I was there until March 2022. Then I left to join a larger firm which was an excellent experience.

What fascinates you about property and surveying?

Flexibility and freedom are key, most surveys are outside, and 70% of my time I’m out at properties. With property, no two are the same. I look at different houses and see some nice ones. I enjoy sharing my experience with others and delivering a service people can trust.

What made you launch a business?

My first job was on 28th December 2023 with SB Home Surveys. I was at my Christmas party in 2022 and decided that in 2023 I would like to go out on my own. Following my notice period, I was ready to start.

How do you find your business leads?

As a result of my previous experience working with estate agents, most of the work comes from them. I’ve been fortunate that people have taken me with them to several different businesses. The website has been reasonably successful, and my profile is building locally.

What other marketing services work well?

Before I set up, I set up a business landline and business WhatsApp. WhatsApp is a good tool. When I quote someone's project, I save their number on my business WhatsApp account. This sends a message to the customer with various business notifications I need. Everything is automated, including letting clients know the survey date.  I send links for reviews too. Taking the time to tailor my business WhatsApp comms has paid dividends, especially for a newly formed company. Having those professional communications in place shows confidence and trust.

What features do you enjoy on Surventrix?

Personally, I use it for valuation work, including Help to Buy, Probate Valuations and I like the custom paragraphs especially. I’m also using the photo functionality for adding and editing photos to my reports.

Would you recommend Surventrix to other surveyors?

Definitely. It’s always difficult to switch to a different platform when you're so attached to what you've been accustomed to, sometimes for many years. I’d previously used Core Logic, but Surventrix is easy to use and highly recommended as it does everything without limitations.
